Frequently Asked Questions

The preconception period refers to the time before conception and has been described in leading medical journals as the next frontier for maternal and child health advancement.

When couples are struggling to conceive, something is disrupting the body's natural function. We look deeply to find the source of that disruption and address it. When we optimize the health of both parents, couples are often able to conceive and have healthy pregnancies and healthy children.

The earliest weeks of pregnancy are where the groundwork is laid for the future health of your child. There is genetic programming happening in those early weeks that will be determined by the health of egg, sperm, and mother. For this reason, optimizing health before conception is the best way to optimize chances of conception and healthy children.

At Eva, we practice functional medicine—a patient-centered approach that looks at the whole person, not just isolated symptoms. Instead of simply treating infertility, we investigate why your body is struggling to conceive in the first place.

Functional medicine focuses on uncovering root causes rather than masking symptoms. We blend this approach with advanced, evidence-based testing to get real answers for every patient.

Our process is thorough and personalized. We investigate nutritional deficiencies, toxin buildup, gut dysfunction, and hormonal imbalances—then address them systematically through protocols designed specifically for you. This way, we help restore your body's natural capacity to conceive and thrive.

You don't have to be planning a pregnancy to benefit from our care. Many women come to us with heavy or painful periods, irregular cycles, PCOS, endometriosis, or PMDD—often after feeling frustrated by limited mainstream options. We have seen how disruptive these issues can be to your daily life.

We've found that understanding the root causes of these concerns is critical to reversing them. When we do this work, women are often able to function freely in their daily lives regardless of where they are in their cycle.

In order to understand our patients' symptoms, we look deeply for their causes. There is an abundance of medical literature that now links menstrual cycle irregularities, decreasing sperm counts, and infertility with modifiable environmental factors. These factors include nutritional and biochemical markers, chemical exposures, gut disturbances, and hormonal imbalances.

All of our patients undergo comprehensive blood, urine, and stool tests to identify which of these factors are at play. Once we have all your results, we put together a personalized, comprehensive plan to bring everything into an optimal range.

This happens over six months through monthly one-on-one appointments, weekly education classes, and ongoing support.

Each of our patients receives a unique six-month plan that is put together after thorough review of their lab work and questionnaires.

Recommendations may include dietary changes, targeted supplementation, detoxification support (such as specific nutrition, sweating, binders, etc.), gut healing protocols, and lifestyle adjustments for sleep, stress, and nervous system regulation.

Each protocol is personalized to what your body needs.

The vast majority of the testing we do has to be completed by specialized laboratories in the United States and is not covered by provincial health care plans like Alberta Health or OHIP. This makes up the bulk of the cost of the program and is foundational for finding the root causes of the symptoms we work with.

However, some patients find that extended health benefits cover portions of consultations, testing, and supplements. We provide detailed receipts for insurance submission.

We advise patients to avoid conception while they are doing any kind of detoxification work. Depending on what your test results show, this may be for a portion of the program or its entire duration.

We discuss this clearly once we understand your unique situation and results.

In a perfect world, we believe all couples should access preconception care about 12 months before trying to conceive.

That being said, most of our patients come to us after having been open to conception for 12-24 months. They haven't yet conceived, but don't want to go down the IUI or IVF route. We are happy to see couples at any stage in this journey to optimize their chances of conception.

Many couples come to us after having been told IVF is their next step, or after having tried IVF and other ART treatment cycles.

IVF is a solution that overrides a problem that exists, but we prefer to look for and deal with the problem itself. Published studies suggest that IVF can lead to more complicated pregnancies and more health problems in children. We believe that a root-cause approach can address infertility more effectively and lead to healthier children in the long run.

Whether you choose Eva's approach alone or in combination with assisted reproductive technology, our goal is the same: create the healthiest possible foundation for conception and pregnancy.

On average, 70% of our patients are pregnant within six months of completing our preconception care program.

Beyond pregnancy, our patients also report improved energy, better sleep quality, regular cycles, optimized digestion, and stable moods.
